Re-usable canning lids? Who knew that one.
Another great way to preserve your harvest from the season is to do your own home canning. Let go as from an ear long gone by it has made a come back with the young and old alike. When you want more control of what goes into your food and save money, the environment canning just might be for you. From the book called” eco thrifty”I found last night yet another tid bit that I didn’t know about canning lids. We have been canning lots of our own foods for the last ten years if not longer. This book makes me know that I am on the right path by canning my own food. The study done in 2011 showed that the amount of BPA in a study having participants eating a single serving of soup from a can 5 days in a row(and a single serving left them hungry) showed the BPA level increased more than a thousand percent. Even though we are not sure what the results might mean for us , the truth is , those of us using our own canned products don’t have to worry about this. Also remember many restaurants use lots of canned items too.
So here is my new news , the one time canning lids I have been using have he potential to expose me to BPA as well. This happens especially if your food comes into contact with the lid. So the new news to me is the reusable canning lids are available. These lids are reused year after year so there is no waste. The initial investment is high I have seen lids for about six dollars for 12 lids. I am going to try this new method when the time comes. You maybe wanting to as well. In the end money will be saved and our planet will be more healthy for it.
